You have to love watching players like Jeffrey Gouweleeuw. Players that can go both ways, that can attack just as well as they can defend. Gouweleeuw was a stand-out performer in last year’s Heerenveen squad. Quite a feat when you consider Bas Dost, Luciano Narsingh and Oussama Assaidi were all a part of that group.
The Dutch U-21 defender stands just over 6’0 so he isn’t a towering presence. But where Gouweleeuw might lack in physique, he easily compensates with talent. He is unusually comfortable dribbling the ball out of defense, or playing a hair-splitting through pass into the striker’s path.
Reminds me of a Benedikt Howedes that is slightly less imposing, but more skilled. Look for him to make a name for himself under Marco van Basten this year.
